Mahale Mountains National Park in western Tanzania is one of the most remote yet spectacular travel destinations. Situated on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, where forested mountains meet the sandy beaches and crystal clear waters of Lake Tanganyika, Mahale is impressive from the onset. Known for its role as a Chimpanzee sanctuary that attracts visitors, a range of other mammals such as black, white and red colobus monkeys, red tailed monkeys and bush pigs can also be seen.
Physical fitness is a necessity for anyone wishing to track chimpanzees. The hikes to spot chimpanzees can take anything from half an hour (when the chimpanzees come down the mountain to the lake) to 8 hours (when the chimpanzees are high up the ridges). On some occasions, the chimpanzees can be simply beyond reach and thus we advise visitors to stay for at least three days to increase their success rate of spotting the chimp’s.

Mahale is only accessible by boat or on foot. One can fly from Katavi to an airstrip close to Mahale and then take a boat to the park.
